It's all just the number of patterns you learn

This is the book that has spawned a large number of other books on the subject of the Grandmaster's thinking processes. It is a classic and for that reason gets 3 stars from me. However, I do believe that the premise upon which this book is based is flawed and for that reason I do not give it a higher rating. Let me explain what I mean.

In this book, Kotov outlines his theory on why GMs are better than IMs, why IMs are better than FMs etc. It all has to do with analysis. They analyse better. Yes, yes, yes. He is right. They do. But why do GMs analyse better? This is the key question. I think Kotov got the answer wrong.

Kotov claims that he was a poor analyst, but that he improved by doing regular exercises in which he analysed complex positions, writing down all the variations. Each position was analysed only once to create a "Tree of Analysis". Candidate moves are chosen and then each move analysed one by one, branch by branch until the analysis is complete. The problem with this idea is that if flies in the face of contradictory evidence that this approach works. I DO agree with Kotov that improvement in analysis is the key to becoming a stronger player. I do not agree that his method will do more than produce a small change in your playing strength.

The contradictory evidence:
1) As so clearly pointed out by Richard Reti in his classic "New Ideas in Chess" even if there is a choice of only 3 moves at each branch point in the tree of analysis, the number of branches becomes so thick that it is impossible to analyse each branch. What distinguishes a titled players analysis from the analysis of a weaker player is the ability to EXCLUDE irrelevant moves, not include ALL moves. Humans will never be like computers in this regard.
2) Brain imaging studies show very clearly that GMs different from IMs and so on down the food chain by their use of memory patterns. They do not think more deeply. This is clearly the conclusion of a number of serious studies on the psychological basis of chess talent (de Groot for example).
3) Strong players have the capacity to hold positions in their heads more easily that weaker players. But it is clear that this is due to pattern recognition. Give a strong player a random position and they are no more able to remember the position that a weak player. This then is the basis of the stronger players greater ability to visualise the board. It is memory for patterns which creates vision. For example, it doesn't take much effort to remember the position Pf2, Pg3, Ph2, Bg2, Rf1 and Kg1. You can visualise it and remember it in seconds.
4) It is clear that strong players perform extremely well at rapid chess. Visit ICC (www.chessclub.com) and watch a lightning match between two GMs. There is no time for analysis when the clock is set for 1 min. There is only time for pattern recognition. Yet lightning ratings correlate very well with FIDE ratings (they are not the same, but they correlate positively).

Club players often ask why it is so hard to improve. They often spend their money buying books which offer advice. In many cases, these books are written by GMs or very strong players. But just because a player is strong, does not mean that they understand the source of their chess talent.

The reason why improvement is hard is clear. First, playing strength is related to the number of patterns learnt. When a player learns the game, they first learn how to move the pieces and on which squares the pieces move. The number of pattern is much less than 100. They can achieve some success with this number of patterns. But as the player advances the number of patterns needed increases - exponentially. It is sometimes estimated (how, I do not know) that GMs need to know 100,000 patterns. FMs may need 10,000 patterns. Strong club players may get away with knowing only 1000 patterns. Do you see why it is so difficult to improve. To increase your rating by 400-500 points, you probably have to learn at least 10 times as many patterns as you know now.

A second point is that as a player matures, i.e. into the 20s and 30s, the capacity to learn new patterns decreases slightly. The brain is less plastic at later ages. This is a reason why mature players find it difficult to improve. This can only be overcome by increased practice.

A third reason why improvement comes early on, but less later is that there is substantial scope for improvement in the teens and early twenties at the period when the brain is myelinating the frontal cortex. At this stage, the player becomes more cautious and is able to concentrate better.

OK, so I have prattled on about why Kotov is wrong about his famous Tree of Analysis. I do want to add that analysis exercises do help with concentration and visualisation. However, they are not the only answer to improvement. Learning patterns is the key. There are few better ways to do this than by playing through Master games - particularly the games of players like Capablanca, Rubinstein, Botwinnik, Tal... Play them, study them, copy them. At later stages, the student can develop by studying games that are more intimately related to the opening repertoire that he or she adopts.

So is there anything good about the Kotov book? Of course there is. I just wanted to emphasise that this book is NOT the answer to How do you think like a GM? Many GMs would agree with me on this. You can learn from this book, but do not take it as the only or major route of study.

I particularly liked Kotovs anecdote in the book about Capablanca's treatment of an ending. There is much to be learned about endgame play in this chapter. There is also a great deal of good advice interspersed through the book, so it does earn its 3 stars.

reframe and problem of meaning
you have to enjoy programming and not treat it as means to google. The book of joy.
You have to enjoy fighting. You need to have enjoyment feeling of trill of conquest, excitement of bluffing like in poker,
computer games, conquering a mountain, mystic feeling of pure detachment and power of a samurai.

If you dont have the good feelings, you tend to avoid the situation. Avoiding is the same as running, making the enemy come after you.
All this feeling can be generated by reframing the meaning in the situation. Refer NLP reframing. The book of fear.

the pain that doesnt kill you will only make you stronger - navy seals : life is all about relationship with pain.

the difference between chess GM compared with IM is GM knows 100,000 patterns, and IM knows only 10,000. Strong players knows 1000. It is not because GM can think deeper or smarter or whatever, it because they simply get exposed to much more pattern because they spend much more time in chess. Other discipline like programming and engineering is no different with chess. THe more time you spend with it the better you get.

Use opposites like helix coils of DNA

Then you will like a drill and is powerful.

Quotes by Rumi

"Reason is the shadow cast by God; God is the sun."

"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I will meet you there."

"Something opens our wings. Something makes boredom and hurt disappear. Someone fills the cup in front of us: We taste only sacredness."

"The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you; Don't go back to sleep. You must ask for what you really want; Don't go back to sleep. People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch. The door is round and open. Don't go back to sleep."

"This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet."

“Silence is the language of God, all else is poor translation.”

“God turns you from one feeling to another and teaches by means of opposites, so that you will have two wings to fly, not one.”

"If in thirst you drink water from a cup, you see God in it. Those who are not in love with God will see only their own faces in it."

Evidence of life after death

Please watch "The Day I Die" BBC documentary in youtube.com. Woman who is blind her whole life can report sighting of tools and her body during near death. And woman without brain activity can recall seeing tools which is impossible for her to see before the surgery. It seems like the mind can function without the brain or body.

Also Roger Penrose hypotheses our brain has microfiber channels that tap into the very small fluctuations of the quantum world. That small fluctuation is probably our consciousness. The Hindus could be right all along the whole universe is consciousness. Else how would the above happen.

Detachment allows you fight smoothly without fear.

You need to balance opposite polarities, the ratio can be 50-50 or 80-20. ALways keep a bit of the opposite polarity around for balance in fighting, like karate.

You can fight off the bully even if you are weaker

If we estimate ourselve weaker than bully we tend to not fight. But this is wrong. You can fight off the bully even if are weaker or stupiter.

Even if you lose the fight, the bully will back off because picking on you is hard work.

You must be evil. Only evil can have no self consciousness. Whenever you focus on self you lose

On the other hand, whenever you focus on yourself, you lose to the bully. You doubt the self. You get unbalance.

Only by being evil, you automatically defocus on the self. And can fight.

Meditate on the satan symbol of the inverted star and the ram.

Never beat yourself up for mistakes or blunders

All human brains are limited. The more you try the more mistakes and blunders you make.

The harder you hit the more you weakness you have. The more successful you are the more mistakes you make. The more intelligent you are the less asshole you become and easier to be bullied. You more strong you are the less intelligent you become.

Knowledge Crystals 14 01 11 Sharp

FIGHT BULLIES AND 100% THEY WILL BACK OFF

Bullies cause 50% of your problems. You must fight bullies else you cannot be happy and explode into madness.

BE HALF EVIL
To fight bullies you must have the evil mindset. There is no other way, only evil can fight evil. Watch "Pitch Black" movie.

Other way to fight bullies:
-Make them dealing with you frustrating and painful. Bullies only pick on easy target.
-Unbalance your enemy with anger, frustration and fear. Keep your own balance.
-You have to be unpredictable and threatening. Deter bad people from bothering you.
-Bluff enemy and yourself.Manipulators use bluffs because their put downs is not true. The only way to fight bluff is counter bluff. No limit Texas Holdem Poker teach you how to bluff.
-Play when you are fighting in order to invigorate your soul, fighting enemies is stressful.
-Frequently you dont have to crush your enemies because you need a relationship with them. You need to half defeat them and half befriend them. Insult and clown them occasionally with the pimp method.
-When clowning, always put the focus on the enemy, never let them put the focus on you.
-Always attack the enemy, never be defensive and focus on yourself. Always use "you" in verbal war. Self help therapy and meditation make it worst because it focus the blame on yourself.
-Karate is your guardian angel. Poker is your guardian devil.
-Eat vitamin B for energy. Take vitamin B for 3 days then stop for 4 days in a week, too heaty.

BLUFF

Whenever someone shame, whether the shame is true or false, it is always an invasion, because reality is neutral, any form of judgement is a bluff. You fight bluff by bluffing back. You act as though what you say is right even though you know is wrong. This becomes your weapon you use consciously. You bluff as though you are the smartest and you intimate people. Remember power is from perception of people, dont have to be reality. Bluffing is a very important weapon against bad people, it makes you not trapped in the good guy victim position. Bluffing is power. Dont use it on good people though, use it on bad people. Play no limit texas holdem it helps pick up the skill of bluffing. If you look deeper, you can see that you are using semi bluff all the time.

You can even bluff yourself about reality. Think yourself as the best, as a hero out to conquer to world. Bluff yourself that your enemy is much weaker than you to attain confidence and your enemy will feel it and fear you. Actually all our perception of reality is bluff, we can never perceive reality with full accuracy, our perception is always a semi bluff. We are always bluffing ourself especially the confident people. Confidence bluff yourself to gain power.

BE THE BEST IN THE MARKET BY WORKING HARD

In this world the only way to be happy is to be best, it is hardwired in your brain. You can be the best even if you are stupid, it doesnt matter. The only thing that matter to be the best is hard work.

You have to be the best so that money will flow to you. And people wont bully you. Even the enlightened monks hide money. You must have a complicated skill where few people can tolerate the boredom and hardwork to get the skill, few people can do it, like programming, engineering, medicine, law, accounting.

You need 10000 hours to be master in anything. So you have to stick to one thing starting from eight years old.

Programming is the best because it is actually playing a big toy. Dentist you have to have very good school results and its boring. Chess is extremely difficult to be proffesional. Law is memorizing stuff.

The best path is start game programming when you are 8 years old.
Then get a couple of proffesional certifications when you are 12 years old like Oracle OCA, Cisco CCNA.
Get into Google or Facebook, earn $20,000 a month.

Practice practice practice. Stress overload yourself to make yourself stronger. Your brain is plastic. Research shows every expert need 10,000 hours of practice. Just like writing english, at first it is very difficult, but after practice practice, you writing english like breathing.

You have to keep the goal of getting into Google clear in your mind to have discipline.

Let the skill grow organically and slowly. It is like wine making. Don't care if you are slower than other people, that means your root is bigger takes more time to form, and your skill later will be stronger than other people.

Plan your fun time first in order to be motivated to work hard. Work hard, play hard.

METHOD OF STUDY

Break to smaller parts n do it one by one, get overview first, note down your question, find good beginner books, memorize by visualizing without reading.
Memorization is not useless, it builds neuron paths and then IQ.

Steps of studying a complicated book: a. Scan the book first. b. Know what is the goal of each chapter. c. Get understanding. Then dig into the details. d. Write what you don’t understand on a notebook. e. If you get stuck in a book, find another good book. f. Read good beginner books first that gives a intuitive understanding. g. Find the good books in Amazon reviews. It is very important you find a few good beginner book to read. h. This is the fastest way to memorize what you read. Everytime you read some small fact, look away and try to visualize back what you read. If you can visualize that means your brain already can remember it.

When reading new book, always read lightly and fast, dont read every detail, get a feel about the book first. Then do some sample questions like SelfTestSoftware to know where to read in detail. Then you do first deeper reading. Then the second even deeper reading.

Note down questions on a txt file to refer back later.

Always read good beginners book first that builds intuitive understanding. Dont read reference books first, it will kill your passion. Use google search type "best books calculus (or other subjects). Or go into amazon.com, search for 4 stars books and read the comments in amazon about the book.

Do sample exam questions because it gives you a focus on where to study.

Know how to research to solve problems. Use internet search engine like Google or Yahoo. Ask questions about life in internet forums like Oracle forum or Low Yatt forum.Use Amazon.com search engine and type in the book related to your problems.Read the reviews in Amazon, it has a lot of details about the book.Use Singapore library search engine to find the good book in Amazon. Reserve the book.Search the rapidshare or bit torrent for free copy of the book.

MISC

Know complicated subjects are evolution of nature into the metaphysical realm. Looking at Oracle or Labview is same as looking at a forest. Reading a luminous math book that switch on the light in a dark room is the greatest joy. The patterns are beautiful. They are not dry.

Hacking: Immerse your life in abstract subject.1. Then there is no boredom. Life is a adventure everyday. You go into a blissful state. You are playing with toys forever. Work is play. You dont have to fix to one subject you can be an expert in many subjects. Refer to Iron Man movie. 2. Oracle, network security, Labview, Linux, quantum theory, computational fluid mechanics, ocean wave mechanics, weather differential equations, number theory, Lisp, C++, control system, Go, chess, bridge, backgammon, western philosophy eg Roger Scruton, poetry, karate.

A lifelong hobby like chess supports your work and prevents depression. Chess is the best game because it has the right balance of shortness and strategy. Go is too long winded. Poker, backgammon, RTS are too simple. Bridge is a bit simple. Programming no matter what is work. Practice tactics and watch opening videos of Chessbase. I recommend Colle ZukerTort and French Defense because these openings base on concepts not tactics.

Dont believe in the spiritual that doesnt work. It is like putting your head in a hole in the middle of a battlefield. I wasted 20 years on this. This includes: New age, pop psychology, religion, inner child healing, mindfulness, rebirthing, deep breathing, yoga, buddhism, christianity, god, meditation, nirvana, no ego, enlightenment, avaita, zen, visualization, relaxation, aikido, NLP, positive thinking, positive psychology, self esteem, ayn rand, forgiveness, let it go, feel your feelings, being open, being in the now, primal therapy, trauma therapy, childhood therapy, afterworld, acupuncture, EFT, rapid eye therapy, Kinesiology, self healing. 3. Don’t think that if you meditate enough, you reach nirvana and don’t need for money, status or anything. Read the hypocritical life of spiritual gurus in Stripping the Gurus book.

Before exam don’t eat Vitamin B for 2 days because you may have problem sleeping. At the morning of the exam, eat it for energy and aggressive brain.
Press hard for 1 minute into the muscle knots near shoulder, neck and head.
Tumo meditation dont have to eat for months.
Garlic can cure cancer and everything.
Sleep well can cure depression. If you dont sleep well, it is easy for you to have fear.
Heavy weight lifting and shikodachi pain bearing generate strong body and then generate strong character. Enduring pain builds brain wiring. Dont flinch practice.
Vit B. To dispel fear and give energy
Dont be afraid of death. We already die everytime we go to sleep. Death is part of god.

"By giving into the bully, billy taught Ryan that his intimidating behavior was okay. You must develop the opposite - afighting stance that comes from deep within and cannot be shaken. You force some respect. This comes from your attitude - fearless and alwyas prepared to fight. It radiates outward and can be read in your amnner without you having to speak a word. By a paradoxical alw of human nature, trying to please people less will make them ore likely in the long run to respect and treat you better. Theis inner strength, however, does not come naturally.
