Toward Manhood by Larry Pesavento

21 aug 2011 940pm toward manhood by Larry Pesavento

a book that verbalize many of the intuition i know but cannot express, like pain and power, ego and no ego, fight and forgiveness

http://www.christoscenter.com/archives.html

A man in the latter stages of ordeal starts to realize that his manhood and deep inner satisfaction comes from finding purpose, not pleasure. He realizes that manhood does not consist in avoiding pain. He sees that the pleasures that he strived for no longer have meaning. Addictions have lost their allure. He realizes there is no 'right' woman that will make life bearable. There are only fantasies of women.

When I talked in the last chapter of the death of the ego I was talking of the movement of the initiate into a space where he is not in control, and his ego is frustrated. During initiation his ego needs for pleasure and his ego needs for status and power are ignored. The adolescent, by moving into the wilderness and away from the marketplace, assume a very lowly position. The elder has purposely put the boy in a space where he is ritually humiliated. He has done this to teach him humility.

In ancient initiation, a boy is purposely and ritually humiliated. His healthy adolescent boisterousness and cockiness is confronted. He is shown that the world does not revolve around his pleasure needs, as in the maternal world, or his power needs as in the paternal world. He is shown that his true power and identity resides beyond his own ego control and needs. His natural ego development is pushed to the next level.

Sun Tzu is truly a great strategist, the small book he written 2500 years ago already contain all the knowledge in the 10 modern strategy books I read including Robert Greene and Game theory books. The important chapters are 1,4,5,6,11 in this free text

http://suntzusaid.com/

All the mistakes I made in the past I discover is because I violated on of the principles lay down by Sun Tze.

Chap 1-Laying Plans
18. All warfare is based on deception. 19. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

Chap 6-Weak Points And Strong
8. Hence that general is skillful in attack whose opponent does not know what to defend; and he is skillful in defense whose opponent does not know what to attack.

‎1
Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State. #
2
It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.

‎22
If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant.

23
If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. #

If his forces are united, separate them. #

‎1
Sun Tzu said: The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy. #
2
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself. #

‎5
In all fighting, the direct method may be used for joining battle, but indirect methods will be needed in order to secure victory. #

6
Indirect tactics, efficiently applied, are inexhaustible as Heaven and Earth, unending as the flow of rivers and streams; like the sun and moon, they end but to begin anew; like the four seasons, they pass away to return once more. #

7
You can be sure of succeeding in your attacks if you only attack places which are undefended. #

9
O divine art of subtlety and secrecy! Through you we learn to be invisible, through you inaudible; #

12
If we do not wish to fight, we can prevent the enemy from engaging us even though the lines of our encampment be merely traced out on the ground. All we need do is to throw something odd and unaccountable in his way. #

If the enemy's dispositions are visible, we can make for him in one body; whereas, our own dispositions being kept secret, the enemy will be obliged to divide his forces in order to guard against attack from every quarter."

‎17
For should the enemy strengthen his van, he will weaken his rear; should he strengthen his rear, he will weaken his van; should he strengthen his left, he will weaken his right; should he strengthen his right, he will weaken his left. If he sends reinforcements everywhere, he will everywhere be weak.

30
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. #Like water, taking the line of least resistance.
31
Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows; the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing. #

‎12
If we do not wish to fight, we can prevent the enemy from engaging us even though the lines of our encampment be merely traced out on the ground. All we need do is to throw something odd and unaccountable in his way. #

There are five dangerous faults which may affect a general: (1) Recklessness, which leads to destruction;(2) cowardice, which leads to capture;(3) a hasty temper, which can be provoked by insults;(4) a delicacy of honor which is sensitive to shame;(5) over-solicitude for his men, which exposes him to worry and trouble.

Keep your army continually on the move, and devise unfathomable plans. #
